What a nightmare.

In the past 24 hours, we go from a correct ruling on the pledge to having it set aside, PLUS the Supreme Court rules that our tax dollars can get routed to the private fundy schools (the voucher thing)... PLUS random drug tests on kids?!

Let's just buy turbins and burqas and be done with it, eh?

Agree. I‘ve been reading and listening to reactions of Congressmen and other people and I have yet to hear anyone opposed to the ruling say anything about the constitutionality of it. All they say is “it’s stupid” and “it’s ridiculous”. No arguments are proposed. I haven’t heard anyone claim it is constitutional. Although, unfortunately, I don’t have cable so I don’t get to hear much about it on TV.

It seems the legal experts are predicting that the ruling will be overturned. But not because they think the pledge is really constitutional. They’re just predicting what will really happen. But I’m afraid uncritical listeners will misinterpret this to mean there is a good reason why it will be overturned.

There’s something funny about the solution people are suggesting that people who do not believe in God do not have to say those two words. So to them it’s ok if we all say a different pledge. I find it very ironic that the word ‘indivisible’ immediately follows these two words.

Yep. The opinion is very well written and rests on good precedent and I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. No one wants to tackle its substance, including the entire U.S. Senate and the President.

Cool

This evening on the local news here in central NC (Fox 8, WGHP), the pandering to the religious right was blatant, and during one sengment, they played clips of individuals reciting the pledge. A veteran in front of a flag, a child, etc. They came to a vital part of the pledge, and the poor Christian on TV said:

"One nation, under God, individual..."

Wow. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. But then I laughed my ass off. Later, they were getting reactions from people around the area. Not one person came out in favor. And they kept saying that the pledge was "being banned."

I'm glad that voter turnout among the uninformed public is relatively low (not low enough though.) I'm worried, however, that voter turn out among the uninformed Supreme Court may be a little higher.

Chuck

Edited to add that another local station WFMY (www.wfmy2.com) has a link to "download the American flag" on their web site. Weird.

Edited again to add the outcome of WFMY2's online poll:

In favor of removal: 4.35%
Against removal: 95.65%

If you've got a second, go vote and throw them off a little.

What does that phrase "one nation under God" mean anyway?

Unhappy

There's people out there that say I'm no good,
'Cause I don't believe the things that I should,
And when the final conflict comes, I'll be so sorry I did wrong,
And hope and pray that our lord god will think I'm good.

Countries manufacture bombs and guns
To kill your brother for something that he hasn't even done.
Smog is ruining my lungs, but they aren't sorry they've done wrong,
They hide behind their lies that they're helping everyone.

In the end the good will go to heaven up above,
The bad will perish in the depths of hell.
How can hell be any worse when life alone is such a curse?

Fuck Armageddon, this is hell

Here's a link to the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Afairs' statement on public prayer:

I feel fairly certain they'll have a press release in the next couple of days on this.
