Post Luedemann to debate Craig

I have received this notice:

Quote:
January 25, 8 pm
DID JESUS RISE FROM THE DEAD?
A debate between Gerd Luedemann and William Lane Craig
Church of the Nazarene
3396 Johnson Avenue
San Luis Obispo, California

Campus Freethought Alliance and Veritas Forum present "Did Jesus Christ Rise From the Dead?" a debate between theologian Gerd Ludemann and Christian apologist William Lane Craig.

Gerd Ludemann is Professor of New Testament and Director of the Institute of Early Christian Studies at the University of Gottingen. He is the author of several books, including Virgin Birth: The Real Story of Mary and Her Son Jesus, What Really Happened to Jesus: A Historical Approach to the Resurrection, Heretics: The Other Side of Early Christianity, The Great Deception: What Jesus Really Said and Did, and Jesus After 2000 Years. His controversial views prompted the theology faculty at Gottingen to bar him from reading exams, advising doctoral students, and evaluating the work of dozents.

Event begins at 8PM. Contact: 805-543-3192.
San Luis Obispo is about a 5 hour drive for me, so going to this would probably be an overnight trip - either a long drive by myself through rush hour Friday night traffic, or coordinating with friends, or taking a day off work and taking Amtrak up the coast. Does anyone have any opinion on whether it would be worth the effort to see this? I would hope that there would be a videotape.

edited to add: Ludemann has a page in the secular web's library:

Gerd Lüdemann

where you can order his books and read articles by and about him.

edited again to add that you can't order his books on that page, but you can through the bookstore here.

Toto, can you give those of us who are unable to attend a post-debate report?

If I go I will, but I am not sure if the travel time is worth it. I'm mulling it over. Is Ludemann a great speaker? Would hearing him debate be so much better than reading his books?

Here is a book review of a previous debate between Craig and Ludemann on the same topic

{Edited to fix a long URL that was stretching the browser window, and to give II credit.}

How I would love to see this debate! I hope a transcript will be available on the web or at least a tape available for purchase.

I've read through most of Craig's debates, and he is indeed a formidable opponent when defending the generic "philosopher's god." I think he will fare much worse at defending the claim that a dead man reanimated after three days.

Isn't this like telling someone the end of the movie before they've seen it??

Hopefully this will be a "good sequel".

Thanks for the book reference. (If I buy a used copy, does II get any credit?)

I don't think that anyone attending the debate is going to have the ending spoiled for them. I think it may be more like professional wrestling, where you know it may be fixed, but you still go for the action. My question is whether the action is worth the drive time.

Yep, they’ve already debated this same topic before. The book contains a transcript of the debate, along with some very informative replies from four scholars (two pro-Ludemann, two pro-Craig). Ludemann and Craig were also able to respond to the critiques. Very helpful book ! I wrote a review of it at Amazon. See if you can figure out which review is mine… Polycarp’s Review of “Jesus’ Resurrection: Fact or Figment?”

I’m guessing Ludemann will change one or two points in his argument. Craig will use the same arguments he always uses. He’s debated the issue many times, and I don’t imagine he’ll change anything.

Toto – IMO, you’d be better off reading the book than spending all that time in your car and having to fork out money for a hotel. I’d be shocked if either debater drastically changes their approach from their first debate.

From reading the reviews, it looks like Craig is a professional debater, and Luedemann was not as articulate in defending his views. I wonder why they are staging a rematch? Had Luedemann had some debate coaching?
