It looks like there's a little more involved than you might think.
And here's a bit on stress levels and pain relative to two commonly used circumcision methods.
Should we start a new thread on the morality of genital mutilation? ;-)

Default For Helen

(HelenM): It's done because the parents believe it's the best thing to do.
(Fr Andrew): If the parents believe that allowing their child to sleep with a adult neighbor is "the best thing to do"--would that make it OK? If not, why not?
What is it about sex?

My answer hasn't changed since last time I answered this question, a day or so ago. Therefore I invite you to look further up this thread and see how I responded last time.

Since when did a scalpel become not a knife?

"Knife" covers any open single bladed hiltless implement.

Since they invented modern hospitals. Amen-Moses, I don't think so many many boys should be needlessly circumsized. They scream real loud too. I was just trying to explain the difference between the word knife and a #15 scalpel. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I get carried away with the medical jargon sometimes.

edited to add: Just saw Fr Andrew said something. Read above post. Thanks. yeah , yeah and yeah I know. I went on a rotation to labor and delivery in school. I never worked there and I'm glad!

As an interesting aside we once tested various blades to find out which was sharpest, this included cutting a variety of materials like nylon, cotton and yes flesh. Guess what was the overall sharpest material across all materials? Flint!

A well knapped flint knife when looked at under a microscope (i.e the sort of flints that are almost transparent at the edges) actually come to a sharper point than a modern steel scalpel blade. (we didn't have access to the sort of blades used in industry that are made out of titanium alloys so they may be sharper)

Sorry about the diversion, now back to the scheduled insanity.

(Amen Moses): "Remove this societal conditioning though and sex becomes purely another fun thing to do..."

(Fr Andrew): Bingo! Except for disease and pregnancy, of course.
As long as you two Bohemian Bonobos never ignore the 'societal conditioning' that prevents engaging in your self-gratifying machinations against those incapable of forming a qualified consent, then carry on.

Have we come full circle?

(Fr Andrew): It's unfortunate that some are unable to distinquish the desire to examine societal conditioning and question the basis for it, from a desire to engage in or defend the activities under examination.
And I'm happy that you recognize a circle--that wasn't so evident earlier in the thread. ;-)

(Fr Andrew): I'm sorry that I didn't respond to this sooner, HelenM, but it's really not much of an answer, is it? You're simply begging the question:
Why is sex an activity for adults, not children? Who says so, and for what reasons? That's pretty much my whole reason for pursuing this.
What's behind our sexual taboos? Do they do us more harm than good?
