One of the lecturers I have had in the past couple of years suggested that 'deformed and mutated' babies as a result of incest is only a stigma attached to society to stop us from doing it.
The genetic chances of something going wrong do increase because you have similar DNA (and a higher chance something wrong would match up.....) but this is not a certainty. |

On the other hand, there are plenty of genetic disorders that are benign for heterozygotes and damaging/deadly for homozygotes. Your chances of inheriting both alleles for a particular disorder go up considerably without a careful breeding plan. Animal breeders deal with this problem all the time, because one wants to backbreed the bloodline to lock in a desirable trait without increasing any undesirable traits.
