The Pope vs. the USSR
With the Pope being here in Canada for the past few days there is lots of talk about how great the robbed one really is. Part of the evidence given to justify this alleged greatness is his contributions towards the fall of Iron Curtain.
Are there any level headed articles available on line discussing the Pope's role in the fall of the USSR? |

The Pope jump-kicked Stalin in the teeth, that's how.

Seriously though, I found this rather interesting article called, The Politics Behind the Shooting of the Pope which covers some of the reasons why the USSR was not too fond of the Pope. It's a bit dated (1983) but is nevertheless packed with interesting bits.
Perhaps even more interesting is the declassified CIA analysis of the Pope's impact on the USSR (PDF). You might want do dig around the site I got it off of to figure out how pertinent that analysis is. Really, all you have to do is a google search to find a load of interesting material.
