Darwin was so "strangely silent on this point" that he went on to write an entire book about it, <a href="http://www.literature.org/authors/darwin-charles/the-descent-of-man" target="_blank">The Descent of Man</a>. See in particular Chapter 6, <a href="http://www.literature.org/authors/darwin-charles/the-descent-of-man/chapter-06.html" target="_blank">On the Affinities and Genealogy of Man</a>
