BAR's cover article this issue (May/June) is on the alleged forgery of the Yehoash inscription. On palaeographic and philological grounds, the inscription is considered a fraud.

They also have a $10,000 challenge to fabricate a Yehoash inscription that will fool the experts: Forge an artifact and win $10,000!

Go to the links in this thread: Make your own artifact for how to do it.

I wonder about this. $10,000 (plus the $4,000 start up costs) is not enough money to bring out the serious artists. After all, Randi offers a million bucks if you can prove the paranormal.

Is this just going to be an offer that will be used to "prove" that you can't fool the experts?

I wonder if this will force them to go back and re-examine the ossuary more closely. It should.

"Them" being the folks at BAR, I assume.

That being the case, I doubt it. The BAR folks seem to be heavily invested in the ossuary being the "real deal"...the ossuary of James, brother of Jesus, founding teacher of the Christian dogma. The managing editor of BAR, Hershal Shanks, is even the co-author of a book with Ben Witherington on James and the evidence of the ossuary.

I put more hope in the examination by the Israel Antiquities Authority, reputedly currently underway and including two separate commissions. However, that said, I still harbor some concerns that the IAA opinion may be colored by impinging political considerations....We shall hope to see. It's been more than two months now, yet the IAA has yet to issue any kind of report.

Hey... That reminds me. Has anybody on this list seen and/or read a copy of the Witherington/Shanks screed on James?

IIRC, it was to be released "in time for Easter." Well, Easter's come and gone.
