Exclamation Need help in defending atheism

OK...

My first religion project in school (I am a senior in high school) is to ask different people about their beliefs in a god.

Naturally, many people want to interview me, knowing that I have none.

So, I would greatly appreciate people putting up links, defenses, questions some raving fundamentalist (well, not quite) might ask. I'll be checking through this web site, but it would be nice to have everything in one spot (this thread).

THANKS

BTW - this is not my first post. I just forgot my password to my old username.

Hello Maestro- I suggest you look at the 'God Squad' thread in this forum. Lots of good questions there- check out WinAce's home page too.

Dear MAESTRO: YEW do not have to PROVE anything about atheism; the *believers* have to PROVE their asserting of a deity. This fact is your "defence of atheism".

Oh, I know I don't have to prove anything. I'll just be bombarded by lots of stupid questions designed to make me look bad simply because I don't believe in a god, and just about everyone else does.

ON another note... I myself have to do this project too. I'm planning on interviewing three atheists (and my grandfather... don't know what he believes), which should shatter my teacher's naïvete.

Thumbs up

You'll have more than enough information here, I should think, but stick to the fact that atheism simply means a lack of belief in a god or gods and you'll be fine (meaning, that this is the default truth until God claims are proved to contradict it).

Good luck.

By the way, the Messiah Truth website is also very helpful (though the webmaster is having problems properly formatting his site, so you may find it a little slow to navigate if you have a dial up).

It's a Jewish website that explains how nothing regarding Jesus has anything remotely to do with fulfilling any of the Old Testament messianic prophecies. Always good to know the source of the NT myths, something very few christian cult members ever do!

Just remember the answer 'I don't know'.

If there's no God, how was the universe created?

I don't know.

If there's no God, how did life start?

I don't know.

And so on and so forth. If you do know the answer, tell them but don't make stuff up or give bad, incorrect answers to their questions.

Obviously, do more research into the matter than that (or you'll just get an F) but don't try and back yourself into an untenable corner in an attempt to win an argument. Atheism is simply a lack of belief in any God(s). Nothing else; it doens't answer any of the questions that religions do or even ask the questions. Most of their questions will relate to the questions that religions ask and answer, so as a result, atheism can't give them an answer.

I hope that made sense.
