Three advances that can be traced to the Roman gods
No doubt all kinds of advances in civilization were arranged by the Roman gods, but some of the gods' actions are easier to trace than others. Here are three large advances that can all be traced to the Greco-Roman pantheon:
1. Fire Prometheus was the one who gave fire to humanity. The importance of fire in cultural progress cannot be underestimated. Thus we owe fire to Prometheus. A related story tells how Prometheus made sure that we weren't stuck sacrificing our best to Jupiter. Can you imagine Yahweh or Baal conceding this? 2. Democracy Rome and the city-states of Greece were founded by the Roman gods. And the Roman Republic, and the city-states of Greece, became the world's first democracies. Thus we owe democracy to the Roman gods. 3. Philosophy Socrates was a truly pivotal individual in the history of thought, coming up with the questioning method so common among both philosophers and scientists. And what was the catalyst for Socrates? None other than the oracle of Apollo. The oracle's message that no one in Athens was wiser than Socrates made Socrates come up with a new conception of wisdom, one that was more practical than that of the Sophists. So there you have it. I know you assign a very low probability to the gods' existence, but if you were right, we might well never come up with fire, democracy, and critical thinking. Something to think about. |
