The motivations for believing in the god concept.
Do good for fellow man, god will save you.
Go fight a war, god will save you. Murder somebody, god will forgive you. Steal money, god will forgive you. You scored the goal! Thank god. When you die, god will give you the answers. The rewards are what flock people to religion. Not faith True sacrifice is doing things out of love, without hopes of a reward. [ July 16, 2002: Message edited by: Ryanfire ]</p> |

I disagree. If someone died saving your life, would you be less thankful that she did it in the pursuit of her own fame and glory? If someone threw themself over a cliff saying they loved you, would you think them any less stupid than if he was doing it for a bet? A sacrifice with a positive outcome is just as meaningful regardless of whether the sacrificee was anticipating a reward or not. And a sacrifice with a pyrric or negative outcome is just as useless if was done for love as if it were done for a reward. |

MadMordigan,
Would you sacrifice yourself for a cause you considered unjust? |

Why isn't it a true sacrifice if someone does something with the motivation not being love?

It doesn't necessarily have to be for love.
The fact remains religion is all about the rewards. You think everybody would be moral if they knew their existence would become absolute after death? Hardly.. |
