When discussing whether or not the founding fathers were christian it would do well to bear this in mind:

When openly declaring ones atheism in the year 2002 is an invitation to hostility and would instantly doom any hopes of holding political office, how prudent would it have been to do so over 200 years ago?

Regardless of ones private/personal beliefs, you will get (and would have gotten) a lot farther in public life if you go sit in a church, synogogue, or mosque every week.
