Post Haemoglobin C

FYI

Haemoglobin C has been mentioned here from time to time, I found a short article on it: Genetic mutation protects against malaria.

Sickle Cell anemia is tolerable in the heterozygous form, but homozygous Sickle Cell trait is quite fatal. The fact that the Sickle Cell gene is only endemic to regions with malaria is elegant evidence for natural selection.

There are other examples of genetic diseases that also offer resistance to malaria, Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency does this and, like Sickle cell anemia, is endemic to malarial regions and people who are descendents of such regions. G6PD deficiency results in hemolytic anemia under conditions of oxidative stress, such as after eating fava beans or, interestingly, taking anti-malarial drugs!
