Post Leahy to kill Church Politicking Bill?

A friend of mine who's pretty plugged in to the doings on the hill wrote this to me:

Quote:
I've heard about this bill. Patrick Leahy intends to kill it in the Senate Judiciary committee and it is highly unlikely that a similar legislative trick would work to bring it to a vote before the whole Senate.
Anybody else hear anything similar?

Question

Is this the bill that is supposed to exempt the wingnuts from 501(c)(3)?

Yes, that would give churches political privileges that other tax-exempt nonprofits are denied. Which is what those fundie theocrats want.

So it sounds like all the Republicans and conservative Democrats in the House will pander to the Religious Right by voting for the bill, safe in knowing that Leahy will kill it for them?

It's still a bad idea.

True. But much better than the alternative.

In a stunning backroom political maneuver that could hand the Religious Right lobby their biggest win in years, Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) reached an agreement with the House leadership to allow him to bring the``Houses of Worship Political Speech Protection Act,``H.R. 2357, directly to the House floor for a vote.

Does the Senate have a mechanism that would prevent this...if the Republicans should regain the majority after this next election?
