Default Ancient Jewish law

Where can I find an answer to this:

Was the mob which was about to stone the adultress before Jesus' intervention upholding the law, or were they vigilantes?

You would find it in the first 5 books of the Bible. I don't want to take the time to search for it, but at some point, the punishment for adultery is stated to be stoning. I don't know of anyone who claims that the citizens about to stone the woman were vigilantes or outside the law. They were upholding the law, Jesus was finding a loophole.

Thanks Toto,

I guess I'll use Leviticus 20:10. It doesn't specifically mention stoning but the offense is death for both participants.

Ah but he didn't did he. He said "Let those who are without sin cast the first stone". So a stone hits the woman right on the head, and Jesus said "AW MAM!!!".
