They have yet to wake up to their hallucination that the Nag Hammadi Codices are the signature of 4th century resistance to the "Orthodox Hallucination". Thank Chrest that the "Christian Dead Sea Scrolls" were eventually removed from the clutching hands of the Registered Hallucagen Controller/Dispensor of the xtians, or we'd be Essenic Chrestians by now.

Gnostic Christians is tautological and highly contraversial in the context of the Nicaean 4th century.
None of the orthodox synod-travelling orthodox christians had anything good to say about these books, except burn them.
Certain "christian texts" are divinely inspired; others are the product of vile heretics.
How do we sort them out?

press release

Quote:
The hoard consists of a collection of ring-bound books (codices) made of lead and of copper. Many of them are sealed on all sides. Scrolls, tablets and other artefacts, including an incensebowl, were also found at the same site. Some of the lead pages are written in a form of archaic Hebrew script with ancient messianic symbols. Some of the writing appears to be in aform of code.It is known that early Christian writers used sealed books as a code for secret teaching, but no actual book has ever been found. They were heavily persecuted and needed to protect theirknowledge. The codices were found in an area to which Christian refugees are known to have fled before and after the fall of Jerusalem in 70AD. The existence of a significant sealed codex is mentioned in the Book of Revelation: and other Biblical books mention metal plates for the use of Temple based documentation.
The codices were originally found in Jordan, which thereby has a claim to ownership.

Quote:
Commenting on the discovery, Dr Margaret Barker said: “The Book of Revelation tells of asealed book that was opened only by the Messiah. Other texts from the period tell of sealed books of wisdom and of a secret tradition passed on by Jesus to his closest disciples. That is the context for this discovery. So if they are forgeries, what are they forgeries of?”

Professor Philip Davies said: “My own scrutiny suggests to me and to several of my colleagues that the form of the archaic Semitic script corresponds well to what was used in the era 200BCE-100CE. However much of the writing appears to be in code and many of the images are unfamiliar. The possibility of a Hebrew-Christian origin is certainly suggested by the imagery and, if so, these codices are likely to bring dramatic new light to our understanding of a very significant but so far little understood period of history. The adoption of a codex format may also be relevant: it is known to have been adopted by Christians fromabout the first century CE.”

When I argued that the throne I found in Venice which was transported from Alexandria had 'paleo-Hebrew script arranged in the form of a code' was from an early date the Harvard Review wouldn't publish it. I guess that's what the P and the H and the D are for.

Maybe they are lists of Jesus' inventions and patent applications.

Now that would be pursuasive, especially if one of the patents were for a perpetual motion machine, and another for cold fusion.

I don't see any evidence for Christianity. The same thing happened (and still happens) with the Qumran material. It's called projectionism.

It seems that the possible "contemporary account of the last years of Jesus" was fantasy on the part of one journalist, who knows what to write to get attention.

The only basis for a Christian connection would come from the imagery and the similarity to descriptions in Revelation, or possibly from the form of the codex.

But it's like I said at the other thread. People are too eager to sell a product. People are too aware of what it takes to get an audience. This is what effectively killed the Mar Saba document. It was too easy to get evangelicals to hate the text by associating it with homosexuality. The script looks like a variant form of Samaritan Hebrew script adapted to the manufacture of the lead tablets. It might be Jewish too. It depends on the dating:

I can clearly see the letters men, nun and tav in places. If I spent the time I could probably transcribe what is visible in the text (which would probably be worthless because so much is not visible). I am going to send it along to my friend who is an expert on the Samaritans and written many authoritative papers on the tradition. My guess is that it is Samaritan or from a group that used the old style of writing. The location of the cave is really important.
