Legomenos mania!
There have been so many statements about what should be expected from Joe Cephus about "so-called". All of these forms are limited to the Middle Voice. But this is (I hope) every single case of every single form of Legomenos (so-called).

But the same question remains, why would the person who added Matthew 1:2 - 17 to the narrative (it was not there in Irenaeus's text of Matthew nor in Tatian's source material) identify Jesus as a man 'called Christ' rather than simply 'the Christ'? It is the only place in the New Testament where Jesus is 'called' Christ according to common opinion or 'men.' There is usually a more mystical understanding of why he is identified as the Christ. My guess is that Julius Africanus is responsible for the addition. The one who smelt it dealt it principle.
Also, if Jesus is God it is hard to believe that when he names people (= gives them their essential identity of being) that legomenos is used. Simon called Peter is odd if it is God doing the naming. To use you examples from Josephus: JOE Wars of the Jews 3:352 give shrewd conjectures about the interpretation of such dreams as have been ambiguously delivered by God ἦν δὲ καὶ περὶ κρίσεις ὀνείρων ἱκανὸς συμβαλεῖν τὰ ἀμφιβόλως ὑπὸ τοῦ θείου λεγόμενα Yes its God doing the laying or the announcing but it is ambiguous. Perhaps that explains the use in the gospel. I don't know. I am trying to think of what the Hebrew equivalent of legomenos is. |

Maybe this explains the use of legomenos in Matthew. It is an Aramaism. "The expression 'ho legomenos Christos (which is intensified by hmknh) indicates that 'Messiah' is not regarded as his true name, and suggests Jewish rather than Christian usage." Maybe that explains all of the uses in the gospel(s)." http://books.google.com/books?id=F_m...omenos&f=false

No. David: This was a brilliant, outstanding, accomplishment, far more than just a useful "bit" of work. This was an enormous travail, designed, for those who have not followed the weeks of wrangling by spin and LegionOnomaMai, to clarify, as to whether or not, Josephus was the author of the disputed phrase. It would have taken me six years to accomplish something like this. I don't wish to imply that the wrangling over Josephus' disputed text was unproductive, simply that the form it took, with a ratio of useful information to mere invective, lower than my IQ, represents arduous slogging to glean something educational, whereas, DCH, has turned that ratio on its head (once again!!) This particular "bit" of forum lore belongs in another section, as well as here on BCH: it also represents a wonderful addition to anyone's library, for those seeking to learn Greek. Terrific post, David, many thanks. Very much appreciated. Quote:
1. Would have been better to provide a link to Whiston's translation, so that we could compare his translation, with its defects, to yours. 2. What do you mean by "Middle Voice"? 3. I thought that maryhelena's question, and stephan huller's comment, were both excellent, and hope you will share your replies; 4. λεγόμενος would appear, from your excellent chart, to represent both Masculine and Neutral form, in the Nominative case, i.e. was this Christ deity described as Masculine, not Neutral? Is that logical? Why would a supernatural, omnipotent deity be presented in a merely masculine form? Does it follow, or is it a mere coincidence, that Hercules was also a male, in his human form, before ascending to Heaven, to reside for eternity with the Gods? |

Roger,
The answer, of course, is "With great difficulty!" I used Kalos 4.11 to create a chart of all forms of the participles of Lego. I copied and pasted the Middle Voice results into an Excel spreadsheet and broke up the data into several columns. Then I created a column for the Bibleworks code needed to search for these various participles in Josephus' Works, which is set up to display the Whiston English Translation and the Greek and a morphologically tagged Greek version. Then I copied the results for each search code (sans the Morphological version) into Word, cut & pasted to categorize them by case, then sex and number, copied that version to a new document, and cut away at the text until I had the right sized snippets. Took about a day and a half. DCH Quote:

Note: once the link loads, for those not familiar with Perseus, just click on the blue link next to the work's title which says "More(798)" |

By the way, since any harmony of the Gospels is going to leave stuff out from this and that individual Gospel, how can we be certain Tatian did not have it in his Matthew? And what is the passage in Irenaeus on which you base the idea that his Matthew does not contain the phrase? As far as I can see, any of the many references to Jesus' genealogy and begetting by Joseph does not require that Irenaeus would have added the phrase even if it were there. Earl Doherty |
