Martin Luther's copy of Josephus without TF?
Host in following interview says at 31:10 that Martin Luther claimed to have "copy of Josephus that didn't have any reference to Jesus" (I suppose he means without TF). Any info about that?

That's a really interesting podcast, but the line about Martin Luther and Josephus is a off hand comment made by the interviewer. Richard Carrier said he didn't know anything about it.
It seems unlikely. |

Some time ago I read a story along this line, the key figure being Napoleon Bonaparte instead of Martin Luther. No reference was provided unfortunately.

Even if it's false (which is likely, of course), it would be good to know specifics if such claim is in circulation.

I suspect it is close to something that Martin Luther wrote. The claim rings a bell, but I have not been able to track it down.
Josephus, Judaism and Christianity (or via: amazon.co.uk) By Louis H. Feldman, Gōhei Hata, eds. (can be previewed on google books) contains an essay by Betsy Halpern Amaru, "Martin Luther and Flavius Josephus." (Some key pages are missing from mr preview.) Luther was heavily influenced by Josephus. |

I've seen that one too. They say Luther only mentions Josephus 21 times in his writings, but I suspect those won't be found online.
"On Jews and Their Lies" cites Josephus 3 times, nothing about Jesus: http://www.humanitas-international.o...uther-jews.htm |

I believe there is also a story of Thomas Jefferson having a copy with the TF. Sounds like an "(Insert Famous Historical Person) had a copy" meme.

Why wouldn't he?
William Whiston published his English translation of the Complete Works of Josephus in 1737. Whiston accepted the TF as genuine, and believed Josephus was a closet Christian. DCH |
