Caesar and Christ - Will Durant
I just read a portion of the section on Christianity in Will Durant's book Caesar and Christ. I found the account of Jesus's life to be fairly reasonable (with my limited historical knowledge). I'm trying to gather get an accurate picture of Jesus, the events surrounding his life, what actually happened, what didn't happen, etc. The book seemed to provide a good part of this picture. Anyone have any other reccomendations for similar books?
Also, Has anyone else read it? Thoughts on it? Inaccuracies? Points he made that are especially insightful? |

Will Durant was a humanist. He was part of the general tendency among liberal Protestants and humanists to see Jesus as a Great Man of History. He was a generalist and not a specialist on that era of history or New Testament studies, so anything he says is secondary.
Christian apologists like to rely on Durant to prove that even non-believers accept the existence of Jesus. There is more discussion and debunking of Durant in this thread: Will Durant and Jesus Christ's Historicity If you are looking for the historical Jesus, I recommend staring here: Historical Jesus theories Especially Bart Ehrman's Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New Millennium |
