Default How many sins in the Bible?

Has anyone ever compiled them all into one list?

And what would you do with such a list? Make sure you hadn't missed committing any interesting ones?

a source of dubious reliability

As of this time, we have located approximately 667 sins mentioned in the Bible
LIST

I say "dubious" because the first sin listed (alphabetically?) is "abortion" which is not actually listed as a sin in the Bible. In addition, "ANXIOUS" is evidently a sin. I guess we are all really sinners, but if we worry about it, we just compound things.

Here's another list.

Or, for a different point of view, one that might find a search through scripture for things that can be labeled as sinful to be a somewhat bizarre waste of time, you might want to read Bishop Spongs' The Sins of Scripture: Exposing the Bible's Texts of Hate to Reveal the God of Love (or via: amazon.co.uk)

Peruse it, I suppose? Why do you ask?

I had already looked on google and found every link you gave. The first list was the most useful, even if has problems in how it labels the sin, but as it says, it's not complete.

Why would you condemn anyone else's search for information, whatever the topic?

Any list would be subjective. They are not clearly labelled within the text.

It's interesting to me that you seem to read condemnation into my post. I don't find a moralistic approach to questions to be very productive in general.

And let's just say that there are questions that do not belong in this forum, and other questions that just miss the whole point.

You mean I misread "bizarre waste of time" as condemnation?

What was moralistic about my question? I'm asking for objective information, as much as can be with the qualification that Revolutionary pointed out that any list would be subjective.

What forum does it belong in then?

What do you mean by "the whole point"? The point of what?

I feel like I'm being punk'd.

Okay, communication on the internet is always a challenge. The nuances tend to get lost, and people see attack where there is just an attempt at light humor.

What is sin?

The writers of the Biblical texts did not have a catalogue of sin. The Hebrews had 613 commandments, some positive, some negative. Jesus supposedly reduced everything to loving your neighbor as yourself, and loving God. This is why I think that going through the Bible to catalogue and count "sins" is missing the point.

The middle ages developed the seven deadly sins, which are not Biblical. Puritans developed the idea of seeing sin, or the devil, everywhere. This system tended to produce psychologically unbalanced people, and even many Christians today reject the idea that pleasure is sinful, or that people can be motivated to do better by labeling ordinary activities as sinful.

Many of us are reacting to that Puritan background where everything worldly was "sinful" - from sex to food, to enjoying things, to wasting time. The counter to this is to see "sin" as desireable, or any attempt to catalogue sin as humorous. See for example Tom Lehrer's Vatican Rag -
Get in line in that processional
Step into that small confessional
There, the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original
So what is the point of your question? Are you concerned about the morality of everyday actions? (There's a forum for that.) Are you concerned about the history of sin? The psychology?

My point is only to get information about the Bible for informational purposes. That is all. I don't know why it matters the reason anyway. The answer to my question should be the same regardless. You talk about "missing the point" as though the only point to examine the Bible is to look for some kind of spiritual wisdom, or to filter it through the most societally healthy outlook. I'm not a Bible believer. I don't care to apply what it says to my life. I'm only trying to get basic factual information about the Bible. Of course there are semantic and cultural issues about the concept of sin, but the fact that people today or throughout history might have looked at Biblical commands or the concept of sin differently from one another, doesn't mean we can't analyze the Bible with regard to sin, however any list-maker cares to define it.

That list of 613 commands (thanks OneInFundieville) is exactly what I'm looking for. Now I just need one for the NT.

I think Toto missed the concept of sin in early christianity. How can you go from early Jews to the Middle Ages for the development of sin? I think you're missing something.
