Default "Don't you DARE rewrite my book!!!"

Revelation 22:18-19 (NIV):
Quote:
I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
Its author is, in effect, saying,

"Don't you DARE rewrite my book!!!"

I wonder what that may reflect -- rewriting of sacred literature being common?

There is some evidence of such rewriting elsewhere in the New Testament.

For instance, while Jesus Christ talks about the "Kingdom of God" in Mark and Luke, he talks about the "Kingdom of Heaven" in Matthew. Was the author of Matthew rewriting the words of his Lord and Savior to make him use some euphemism for "God"? This would be consistent with the old Jewish tradition of using euphemisms for the Divine Name, like "G-d".

Also, while Mark 10:1-10 has JC state that divorce is always forbidden, Matthew 5:31-32 has him make an exception for sexual unfaithfulness.

Any other interesting examples? Any interesting patterns?

I'd say this is the first recorded case of copyright protection...

Perhaps that passage was added later...

Given the dates involved, I suspect that the injunction refers specifically to the book of Revelation, rather than the NT or the Bible as a whole. There aren't many plagues mentioned elsewhere in the NT, and I have yet to see even the most ardent end-times supporter argue that, say, Philemon might be considered prophecy, whereas Revelation itself clearly claims to be such.

The OP was wondering where the author got the idea to put that in his book, not that the author was referring to any other book.
