Severus of Al'Ashmunein on St Mark and Paul's Vision on the Way to Damascus

Je voudrais donc me rendre dans la province d'Egypte pour y prêcher l'Évangile, mais les Égyptiens ont le cou dur et indomptable : je crains fort que ma peine ne soit dépensée en pure perte. »
Pendant que le saint martyr, l'évangéliste Marc, se livrait à ces tristes pensées , l'esprit incertain et ne sachant que faire, tout à coup le Sauveur du monde, Notre-Seigneur Jésus-Christ, lui apparut porté sur une nuee lumineuse et environné d'une grande gloire, tel qu'il se manifesta à l'apôtre saint Paul sur le chemin de Damas.
A la vue de la gloire du Seigneur, saint Marc se prosterna la face contre terre et demeura ainsi quelque temps devant Jésus-Christ, aussi immobile qu'un mort. Puis, reprenant ses sens et revenu à lui, il dit au Sauveur : « Seigneur, qui ètes-vous? » Le Sauveur lui répondit : « Je suis Jésus-Christ. Lève-toi maintenant, et pars pour la province d'Egypte , afin d'y prêcher l'Évangile , car c'est là ton héritage, et les fruits que produira cette terre devenue fidèle seront, par un effet de ma grâce, beaucoup plus considérables que ceux de toutes les autres régions du monde. J'étends ton pouvoir sur toute l'Egypte, sur la Nubie et la Pentapole, sur la province d'Afrique et toute la contrée occidentale de ce pays, ainsi que sur les deux lies de Cypre et de Crète. Les habitants de toutes ces contrées viendront te prier d'intercéder pour eux, et ils seront sous l'autorité de ton siège. Lève-toi donc, et va-t'en à Jérusalem ; tu y séjourneras l'espace d*un mois, afin que tu reçoives la dernière bénédiction de Marie, ta mère selon la chair, car le temps de la séparation de son âme d'avec son corps n'est pas éloigné. Lorsque tu auras reçu sa bénédiction, tu distribueras tous tes biens aux pauvres ; après quoi lu te rendras en Egypte, pour y prêcher le royaume des cieux. Voici que je suis avec toi jusqu'à la fin du monde. Que ma vertu et ma bénédiction demeurent à jamais avec toi, avec ton siège, avec tes enfants qui viendront après toi dans tous les temps. »
Telles sont les paroles que le Sauveur adressa au grand saint Marc l'évangéliste, puis il remonta au ciel, environné dune grande gloire, pendant que le pieux apôtre l'accompagnait de ses regards et lé contemplait. Lorsque saint Marc l'évangéliste se réveilla, il se sentit fortifié, et, le trouble que lui avait causé la vision s'étanl dissipé, il fit toutes ses dispositions pour le voyage, il partit pour Jérusalem, selon l'ordre qu'il en avait reçu du Seigneur.

St Mark's most common title in the Coptic tradition is that of 'the beholder of God.' I think this is because the vision that the apostle speaks of in 2 Corinthians 13 (and Acts is developed from that) is the very same vision attributed to Mark here.
