I've noticed quite a few athiests who don't discount it around here. Granted, they don't read it with the God hangup I do but they find it interesting and approach it with a sense of criticism and study.

Lets see:
Anonymous authors for the most part. Uncertain authorship in many other parts. Uncertain dates of composition (Many prophesies are thought to have been written after the fact, like Dante did in the Inferno) Compiled by committee, with inclusions judged by doctrinal and political qualifications, rather than by authenticity. It says bats are birds. It says the world is flat. It says the sky is solid. Donkeys can talk, people can fly, and a man named jesus lives in the sky! By the way, this would go better in BC&H, or whatever they're calling it now. |

Actually, according to Bart Ehrman (Misquoting Jesus) there are more inconsistencies in the bible then there are words. Now "inconsistency" here means a mismatch between two ancient manuscripts. This can be as simple as a spelling mistake or a change in word order, but it can go up to the copyists inserting their favorite bit of theology!
So, depending on how one defines "contradictions" your number of 420 may be on the low side! Gerard Stafleu |

On the other hand, if the piece of paper itself said that a god inspired it... well, of course that would be an entirely different scenario. Though, for the analogy to be complete, such a claim should have problems similar to the Biblical equivalent. How about an ambiguous sentence in Sanskrit which might be interpreted as implying that the words of some sentient dairy products might be of special merit? That'd clinch it. |
