Default are we any different than animals?

last week a friend was telling me that humans and animals are on different levels, and both are above plants. The distinction between animals and plants is based on movement, and the "distinction" between animals and humans is based on free thought and speech (this is based on jewish ideas and teachings from the talmud)

Genesis 2:19 states: And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast

and we all know the famous tale of Adam being created from the dust of the earth, so aren't we all from the same place, why is there a distinction, and dont we go after the same things as animals do? (feeding, shelter, community)

I had the same conversation with a fundie at my dealership. I told him I could not see any more relevance to my existence than, say, a tree. What does distinction mean? A tree doesn't think? Like Kent Hovind "thinks"? There's no distinction, we're all born from this lump of crud and will return to it.

My Pondarosa Pine in my front yard will have contributed as much to the universe as Hovind upon their demise. Hovind will be a little below plants, unless he chooses cremation, where he will be strewn equidistant for a bit.
