The Martyrdom of The Apostles
Not sure if this is the right forum, but it seems to fit here better than in GRD.
I have looked through a couple of web pages, and have an abridged version of Foxe's Book of Martyrs, but cannot find anything earlier than Foxe in relation to the murder of the original twelve because of their belief in the divinity of Jesus. There are no footnotes in the version of Foxe which I own, - it was published basically as a Christian polemic, and the sites I checked all state that the Apostles died "according to tradition". Is the whole tradition Foxe, writing nearly 500 years ago?. So, does anybody have any scholarly references which precede Foxe relating to the death, and if you like, the evidence that they actually died proclaiming the truth of Jesus. Or did Foxe just make the thing up out of whole cloth? Norm |

From most recent to oldest:
Martyrdom of the apostles The Martyrdom of the Apostles The Apostles and martyrdom IIRC, Paul and Peter are really the only apostles whose martyrdom can be arguably established. |
