Default What if another 1,000 years passes and Jesus hasn't returned to earth?

If Jesus does not return to earth within the next 1,000 years, will Christianity have become a forgotten religion?

What does this have to do with Biblical Criticism?

Christianity will undoubtedly be diminished considerably in the next 1,000 years, but I don't think another millennium without his return will totally destroy the religion any more than the first two did.

Agree with you.

What?? Most people got no patience at all?

The Bible, as innacurate as it may be, does definintely leave the so called "end times" open to question----as far as when it will actually happen.

"Within this generation" is of course long gone. And has to be explained in any way possible. -----I go for that part being the destruction of Jeruselem in about 70 AD.

Fits anyway.

Except of course 2 Peter written after 70 CE says the second coming hasn't come yet. So the destruction of the temple wasn't the promised return, at least for those alive in 100-150 CE.

I think all major religions will be debunked by scientific explanations within 100-200 years. Jesus will be as relevant as Zeus in terms of history. Only total nutjobs will still have "faith" in the story of Jesus.

Yes, I'm being optimistic but that is my true feeling. This is also based on the fact that we don't end up in WWIII BECAUSE of religion, if that is the case the nutjobs will end up being the ones that run the world and we'll never make any progress towards the debunking of religions.

Anyway, keep up the good work scientists, I know there are a lot of you on this board. The scientific method RULES! Haha.

I would keep the "god is dead" predictions in check. Religions have a tenacity for survival.

Of course history would show there is no correlation that would lead this to be expected. YHWH is far older than the Greek and Roman Gods, and now is followed by 1/3 of the world's population ( note: population fallacy not being used here - just a point of fact). Just because the Greco-Roman gods weren't believable enough to stand the test of time, doesn't mean YHWH/Jesus will.

The Hindu Gods are even older yet, and they're still around. It's a question of how relevant YHWH/Jesus will be.
