Whatever major Bible translation that a person wants to use, the Bible says that God supports slavery. The average sixth grader would be able to comprehend that that is the case based upon the Scriptures that I posted in the opening post.

Go here for a good explanation of slavery in the Bible.
I do agree, that even though the Christian God is not supposed to be a "God of confusion", your statement about "The average sixth grader..." can be sympathized with. |

25:44
Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. 25:45 Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. 25:46 And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour. King James version All these are Leviticus 25:46 American King James version And you shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your slaves for ever: but over your brothers the children of Israel, you shall not rule one over another with rigor. American Standard version And ye shall make them an inheritance for your children after you, to hold for a possession; of them shall ye take your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel ye shall not rule, one over another, with rigor. Basic English Version And they will be your children's heritage after you, to keep as their property; they will be your servants for ever; but you may not be hard masters to your countrymen, the children of Israel. Douay-Rheims Version And by right of inheritance shall leave them to your posterity, and shall possess them for ever. But oppress not your brethren the children of Israel by might. Darby Bible And ye shall leave them as an inheritance to your children after you, to inherit them as a possession: these may ye make your bondmen for ever; but as for your brethren, the children of Israel, ye shall not rule over one another with rigour. English Revised Version And ye shall make them an inheritance for your children after you, to hold for a possession; of them shall ye take your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel ye shall not rule, one over another, with rigour. Webster's Bible And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession, they shall be your bond-men for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigor. World English Bible You may make them an inheritance for your children after you, to hold for a possession; of them may you take your slaves forever: but over your brothers the children of Israel you shall not rule, one over another, with harshness. A very few bibles leave out the "permanent" slavery part, but they all include the right of passing down the slave to children which makes the no permanent slavery argument atrociously weak even in those versions. Accept it, god wants us gentiles to be Jewish slaves. This parochialism wouldn't seem to correspond to a god which encompasses all of humanity, but it makes a lot of sense for a purely Jewish god. |
