I'm so sorry to hear that Maccoby passed away! I have yet to read his books and he seems to have written some excellent food for thought! (From a Jewish perspective, of course!)

I always have to read books several times before they sink in. My third reading of The Mythmaker is due and it will be a sad journey.

I think that his last book, Jesus the Pharisee, was printed in 2003. It does not seem to be available. Has anyone read it? Does anyone know if this book is coming out soon?

I too am saddened by the death of Maccoby. I had always thought it would be nice to correspond with him, but I never could find an email address. "The Mythmaker" was the first book I read on my journey to becoming a freethinker. It was then that I began to have extremely serious doubts about Christianity. I then ordered "Revolution in Judea" and that pretty much sealed the end of my Christianity.

Is Hyam Maccoby the Rodney Dangerfield of NT scholarship?
"Shortly before his death, Maccoby completed his last book, Antisemitism and Modernity"
It seems that there are 2 new Maccoby books that I can look forward to reading. Why is Maccoby the Rodney("I don't get no respect")Dangerfield of NT scholarship? He is very rarely quoted in respectable scholarship and very rarely included in bibliographies. Is he considered too partisan? Is he considered a crackpot? Does he stretch the evidence to far? |

Because he shows in no uncertain terms what an idiot Paul was, and because he also argues that Jesus did not found Christianity. People who argue that are instantly relegated to the back benches.

I've only just recently gotten around to reading him but I am sorry to hear of his death.
Any fans interested in defending his views might want to take a look at http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=84972 PS Can somebody PM me the way to present links with their actual name instead of the address? I've seen it done but I don't know the trick. In other words, how could I have gotten the above link to read as the name of the thread rather than as it currently appears? |
