Default Writing the Bible

the bible is kind of like an annal that has been updated throughout time if you believe it. it goes from waaay back in the beginning (mid bronze age?) to the iron age (new testament). Well, why did it all of a sudden stop being updated? why arent there people today writing portions of the bible, recording modern events and how they might be connected to God? You might say taht there's nothing worth noting but there is. and its suprising how many minor historical conflicts are mentioned in the bible.

Sheep, you may want to rephrase that first sentence...I think you meant annal?

You're not supposed to add or subtract from the word of God. The Bible has been updated but now they're calling it the Left Behind series of novels.

woops. i meant annal. how do i edit? :banghead:
so, cydonia, (can i please refer to you as mrmars?) are you saying that the religious people today are neglecting the novels that their spiritual ancestors have been updating for centuries? sorry. didnt quite understand...

some say that the old testament is the word of God. but the new testament is definatly written by people.

christianity/abrahamicgodreligions seem very much based on the bible today. what happened before the bible? (sorry. this is very random)

and if the old T is the word of God, why does he sound so self centered and boastful? Almighty... The Merciful... Good...?

If there's no edit button at the end of your post a mod may be so kind.
Call me whatever you want, it's all good.

I was just being sarcastic. No one touches the Bible anymore, because apparently all the stuff in the New Testament was word for word accounts of what Jesus actually said, (even though they were written decades later) and since he's the whole point of the Old Testament, once his last words are gone there's no point anymore. Except the Book of Revelations, I suppose. That book was meant to be the update of the Bible. It's not clear enough though, so books like Left Behind come in to fill in the blanks and bring it more into line with our own experience. Because there's no way the book of Revelations is just a bunch of drug induced delusions, right?

Everyone has their own opinon on this, but I was brought up to believe that from the time the first gospels of the New Testament were written, God has personally seen to it that no distortions or changes have ever crept in. So, it hasn't been changed because God is making sure we don't change it.

Of course, there are supposedly several books of the bible that were completely taken out anyway, hundreds of years ago, someone more knowledgable than me can add to this.

God sure loves people telling him how great he is. If it doesn't happen constantly he gets grumpy.

Well, there was a time a few years ago when I was really into the history of the bible, and the Council of Nicea came up a few times. So here's a totally random link I found from BBC that seems to get into it:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A307487

Think I'll read this myself for some brush-up.

Well, people have written addons to the Bible. Ever heard of the Koran or the Book of Mormon?

But today, I'd imagine it'd be a lot harder to just make something up wholecloth and get people to take it as canon, simply due to the belief that the Bible is the final and complete word of God. Simply re-interpreting the old stuff is much easier and garners less scrutiny.

Ah, but this is exactly what happens: people record modern events, then they shunt them into their beliefs about the Bible as if the Bible predicted them from the start. Events interpreted as end times signs, fulfilled prophesies, etc, and you even have people assimilating modern ideas, such as UFO/alien beliefs, into their religious veiws.

Bear in mind such things probably weren't minor at all to the people writing about it. Many modern military conflicts would also be considered very minor if read 2,000 years in the future.

thanks for the link. i was wondering why mary was so important...

but if the church could edit something that was suppose to be holy to them... it makes you wonder if they really believed. i think not.
