Default Do you know any German? Or Latin? Or Armenian?

I am considering doing an online collaborative effort to translate book 1 of the Chronicle of Eusebius of Caesarea into English. The idea would be to make it possible for anyone to edit any entry, have single sentence entries, and just go for it.

The original Greek text is lost, apart from portions preserved in later writers -- there is a lot in George Syncellus, for which an English translation happily exists. But an Armenian translation of most of it does exist. I have a Latin translation of this, and a German translation of it.

I'm trying to get hold of photocopies of the Armenian text, since this includes yet another Latin translation.

The idea is to line up all the sources in columns for each sentence, and then produce our best guess for an English translation of the original. I'll drive this from the Latin translation, but we should have the Armenian on hand.

The work contains long extracts from now lost historical works by writers such as Porphyry, Alexander Polyhistor, Berossus, etc, as well as some from extant writers such as Josephus and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. As such it is of real interest, I think.

Anyone like to be emailed when the project is ready to go? You don't have to know a lot, or commit to anything -- we're all busy people. But I'd like to know what sort of language skills are around.

All the best,

Roger Pearse
