Default What about Luke 24:33-34?

In the KJV, Luke 24:33-34 say “And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.” Now are Christians asking us to believe that the eleven and they that were with them were quite certain that Jesus had risen from the dead in spite of the virtually universal view that Jesus would not rise from the dead? John says that at the tomb Mary thought that the body had been moved, and that Peter went away confused. The word “indeed” in the KJV is quite assertive. The NIV says “It is true!”, which is also quite assertive. Notice the exclammation point that the translators used after the word "true".

It will be quite interesting to see what Christians have to say about this.

I have an even more basic question. How could Jesus have appeared to "the eleven" if, as John tells us in his account of the same event, Thomas was absent?

You need to rephrase the question. You are asking us if we believed how certain the witnesess to the missing body believed. This is like asking us if we believe that Mohammed Ali truely believed he was the greatest.

Ok, "Why should anyone believe that the Eleven and they that were with them were pretty sure that Jesus had risen from the dead in spite of the virtually universal view that Jesus would not rise from the dead?"
