Default Classical Armenian-English resources

Book 1 of the Chronicle of Eusebius of Caesarea has never been translated into English. It contains large chunks from now lost texts, including Manetho, Porphyry, Castor, etc.

The Greek is lost, but an Armenian translation has reached us, in two late manuscripts. No critical text exists, but modern Latin and German translations have been made.

I was wondering about picking up a bit of Classical Armenian. However according to this online tutorial, no English dictionary exists; only ones in German.

This would mean that to translate one would look at a word, find it in the dictionary, find the German, and then find out the meaning of the German in English. Thus it would seem just as good to translate the German translation, and probably less arduous.

But is this right? What resources do exist for Classical Armenian?

All the best,

Roger Pearse

I live in a city that has a large Armenian population, so it is hard to believe that this should be so obscure. Is there an Armenian church in your area?

Classical Armenian is also known as Grabar, and there is a dictionary listed here.

Thank you for the link. The dictionary may not be Classical Armenian-English, tho. I've emailed them to ask.

I wonder how much modern Armenians understand Classical Armenian. But I agree, if one could hire one to make a translation, that would have to be better.

All the best,

*gasps and dies of shock*

Someone actually said Armenian when they meant Armenian and weren't getting it mixed up with Ariminian?? I never thought I'd see the day!
