Default Scandal at the SBL (Sausagefest!)

Roland Boer, who blogs as Stalinsmustache, has had a paper accepted for the upcoming SBL by the "Prophetic Texts and Their Ancient Contexts session S20-330", which he titled "Too Many Dicks at the Writing Desk or How to Organize a Prophetic Sausage Fest" (available on scribd here.

The paper concerns phallic sexual imagery in the Bible, of which there is a certain amount. A sample observation:
Quote:
In sum, from Lévi-Strauss we gather the insight that writing is an assertion of power and from Petterson the point that writing is a crucial means for constructing a masculine-class complex. It should come as no surprise, then, that the scribe of Ezekiel 9 seems to have dipped his pen(is) in steroids, for in the act of writing he asserts a masculine power that challenges that of chiefs, princes and kings.

. . .

So we have a situation where the scribe’s cock is his very firm, iron- like pen, the implement that rests on his balls and constructs the world of the text. That pen(is) is the implement of power, a power that is inescapably masculine due to the very identity of the pen(is) itself. Rigid, solid, unchallengeable, is it not?
However, the Manager of Programs at the SBL asked that the title be revised:
Quote:
It is the first Annual Meeting presentation to use the word “sausage,” to my knowledge, and indeed a little controversially. I appreciate the gendered paronomasia in the first portion of the sentence, but it has come to my attention that the second part of the sentence is offensive to some. To be clear, it is only the last phrase “sausage-fest” that has been taken as gratuitous. Would you consider revising the title to something like “Too Many Prophetic Dicks at the Writing Desk” or “Too Many Dicks at the Prophetic Writing Desk”?
His Reply.

Question: why is "dick" acceptable but not "sausage?"

I have been a fan of Roland's blog for some time now. It is hard to tell what his opinion is on a number of issues that concern us here - probably because he is not really interested in them.

My favourite post of his would have to be:
http://stalinsmoustache.wordpress.co...om-of-finland/
which had the immediate (and intended) effect of shutting "irishanglican" (on Roland's blog at least).
