Snopes.com provides hundreds of examples. One that I had foremost in mind, was that old "Proctor & Gamble donates to the Church of Satan", saw that has been passed around among christians for decades.
They never did give a shit whether what they were saying was factual or not, just another convenient lie employed to promote their religious paranoia.

There is, of course, the 'nova theory.' A nova faded out just as the magicians arrived near Bethlehem. Too bad that astronomical observations from other civilizations fail to note a nova at that time even though they report novae both before and after.

The mythic quality of magicians from the East validating a local god is really quite apparent.
