Default They died for a lie

Quiz for everybody.

The early chapters of Acts records that there were Christians who died for a lie.

Who were they?

I can only think of the events that I remember from ch. 5 dealing with Annanias and his wife Sapphria. Don't quote me on the spelling of those namees though. Not sure if they are accurate.

Only the fates of Jesus, Judas Iscariot, and James son of Zebedee are recorded in the Bible. All the rest of thr 'martyr' stories are Catholic legends with no evidence or Biblical reference from my understanding.

Hi Ladyshea,

IIRC, you omitted Stephen.

The man's a winner!

So I think we can have less talk about Christians not dying for a lie.

You're right, I was thinking only of the apostles...and now realize I completely misread the OP. He wasn't asking for martyr stories, he was asking for an example of people dying for a lie that the Bible indicates was a lie sorry, my mistake

Question

Strictly speaking, Ananias and Sapphira didn't die for a lie, they died because of a lie. They tried to keep money for themselves without giving it all to Peter, and for this great sin, the Holy Spirit struck them down. Or something.

If Sapphira had known that her husband was mortally punished for telling a lie, and she stuck to the lie anyway, that might count as dying for a lie. But 5:7 says she didn't know what had happened. They both thought they could get away with it.

The moral of the story, of course, is in verse 5:11 "Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events." You don't hold out on Peter, motherf***ers! He'll get medieval on yo' ass!

I would object for "Christians". The "Nazarene" community in Jerusalem, despite the best efforts of "Luke", were not Christian as such. James & Peter were never Christians, let's say Jesusine Jews only.
Best regards, Bernard
