Default Dialogue With Trypho - Justin M.

Justin Martyr's Dialogue With Trypho reminds me a little of Stobel's "Case For Christ" in that Justin makes an assertion about Jesus regarding the Hebrew Scriptures and Trypho seems to accept it is "ok, that's good enough for me... next issue."

I was wondering... was there ever a response published by Jewish opposition from those days? Or anything that may have survived the times?

But, Trypho did not accept Justin Martyr's Christ. It was not ok at all. There were fundamental disagreements between Trypho and Justin.

Justin Martyr would claim that Jesus was the offspring of a Virgin as found in Hebrew Scripture but Trypho would declare such to be a monstrous phenomena just like the fables of the Greeks.

Trypho considered the birth of Jesus no different to the birth of Greek mythological Gods.

This is Justin Martyr in "Dialogue with Trypho"
Quote:
..........And I continued: "Now it is evident to all, that in the race of Abraham according to the flesh no one has been born of a virgin, or is said to have been born[of a virgin], save this our Christ."

And Trypho answered, "The Scripture has not, 'Behold, the virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,' but, 'Behold, the young woman shall conceive, and bear a son,' and so on, as you quoted.

But the whole prophecy refers to Hezekiah, and it is proved that it was fulfilled in him, according to the terms of this prophecy.

Moreover, in the fables of those who are called Greeks, it is written that Perseus was begotten of Danae, who was a virgin, he who was called among them Zeus having descended on her in the form of a golden shower.

And you ought to feel ashamed when you make assertions similar to theirs, and rather[should] say that this Jesus was born man of men. And if you prove from the Scriptures that He is the Christ, and that on account of having led a life conformed to the law, and perfect, He deserved the honour of being elected to be Christ,[it is well]; but do not venture to tell monstrous phenomena, lest you be convicted of talking foolishly like the Greeks."
Now, if there was no actual Jesus, and that stories about him were written at around the end of the 1st century, then it would likely take years before the Jesus story would have any major impact. And the 2nd century may have been the first time Jews became aware of a character called Jesus the Christ born of the Holy Ghost and a Virgin.

So far as I'm aware, no Jewish document from the first or second century critical of Christianity, whether or not it was a direct response to any Christian writing, has survived. My awareness, however, is a long way from exhaustive.
