Default The Holy Bible

Around my house are various books with this title. Would not a more useful title be "Miscellaneous collection of ancient near eastern, Greek and Roman texts"?

Is not this idea that this clearly edited set of texts have actually got much in common with each other and are in some way special likely to lead to a biased reading of what they are?

I have a mild preference for 'Tanakh'.

Since when has marketing ever concerned itself with accuracy?

I'm interested to know how these texts can be both edited and miscellaneous.

Most people who take the Bible seriously believe you're supposed to read it with a bias, and those people are the Bible publishers' primary clientele.

In umpteen years I've never heard that.

In general, I agree, but the wording here leaves a bit to be desired. I
think anyone who feels the true power of the book, cannot read it merely
for informational purposes. Yes, it has basic information, but reading it
for ONLY this is completely missing the point. I would choose "mindset",
instead of "bias."

Can we have some quote from someone who reckons that the Bible should be read with bias? Which brave person has put his name to that? I mean, let's not delude ourselves building a card house built on jelly, eh.

I don't count now but my former self would assert that vehemently - it is god's word, some around here assert it is inerrant, so that is obviously a mindset or bias. (And of course, taking a group of miscellaneous documents and editing them to be a whole does not necessarily mean the pigs ear has been turned into a silk purse!)

And there are significant variants about what books you find in various versions!

(Hint of a possible bias - the thread title!)
