Default Julia Sweeny caught making a biblical mistake

The first post from here shows the downside of pointing out biblical illiteracy.

Note the contempt the guy has, and how he generalized it in his thread title.

His source for the Julia Sweeny quote is here.

I have to say that this character comes out with some rare good advice here:
Quote:
Folks, this is a lesson to be learned. If you are going to criticize Jesus, Christianity and the Bible, TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN WHAT THE MERF YOU'RE CRITICIZING FIRST.

I didn't read the link to theologyweb, but I'm assuming he's addressing this quote:

Quote:
When he turned all those people into pigs and made them run off a mountain, it was so hateful, not just to people but to pigs. I felt upset for the pigs!
Wherein the Bible has Jesus casting the demons (Legion) into a herd of pigs who then charge into the water and drown. I caught that too, but I marked it down to her speaking off the cuff and making a misstatement. You're right, though. It doesn't help for critiques to be demonstrably, flat-out wrong.

Hm. It's advice the fundies never seem to apply to themselves.

Oh, they want everyone else to learn the bible before daring to criticizing it. But they have no problem criticizing other religions, evolution, etc. without the merest thought of taking the time to educate themselves on those topics.

"Physician, heal thyself."

Notice also this (ahem) christian's rationalization:

"Iwould pray for Sweeney, but she's my political enemy and I now hold her in contempt for making an error regarding a religion she doesn't follow, so my best alternative is to laugh at her. WWJD? He'd laugh at people who didn't memorize the Torah, of course."

1. Ah. So this fundie *would* pray for Sweeney, if Sweeney weren't a political enemy. I don't recall any exceptions to "pray for enemies, bless those who curse you..."

2. And the fact that this fundie focused on someone who was a political enemy only shows how far fundie and conservative politics have blended until they're one and the same.

3. There are also no texts about Jesus laughing at those who don't memorize the scriptures. Hard to believe that woudl be the case anyhow; setting aside for the moment the question of whether such behavior would be in character, there is another question. At that time reading/writing was a rarity and few Jews would have memorized the Torah.

All in all, I'd say that this thread in TWeb exposes more stupidity on the part of so-called christians, than on the part of Sweeney (whoever she is).

Sauron

I think that last post was mean to be a sarcastic jab at the prior two posts.

Ah, gregor: you may be right. If that had been posted here, I would have immediately assumed that sarcasm was at work. But so many of the things I read at TWeb are outrageous, that I assumed it was for real.

Julia Sweeney is a comedian. There's a thread in PA&SA about her recent SF Gate interview. She's becoming well-known for her atheism.
