Hermes Trismegistus and Apollonius of Tyana in the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh

Quote:
According to the Eastern, Islamic tradition of Hermes Trismegistus, Hermes was a divine philosopher or Prophet who lived before the time of the Greek philosophers, and he was the first person to whom God instructed the secrets of wisdom and divine and natural sciences. Muslims equate Hermes to the Prophet Idrês, whom the Jews know as Enoch. In the Qur’án, it is written:

“Commemorate Idrês in the Book;
for he was a man of truth, a Prophet;
and we uplifted him to a place on high”
(Q. 19:57-58).

Hermes is also called the "father of the philosophers" in the Muslim Hermetic tradition, because he was believed to be the most ancient of those who propagated wisdom and sciences.

I do not have the specific verses since I don't have any Bibles, but in Genesis there's some stuff about the sky seperating 'the waters above' from 'those below' or something to that effect. The only thing coming near to any sense to me about it would it meaning the writers thought we lived in a bubble or in a dome under a sea or something else wacko (is rain caused by the dome leaking? )

So, is that what it sounds like to anyone else?
No, it sounds like they had a world view which was popular in that region of the world around the bronze age/iron age time or so.

Yes, the universe was a bit like a dome but not under sea - it was more like there was sea all around and beyond. Look at the sea - it is blue. Look up at the sky - it is also blue. Clearly there is water both places, right? Well, no but that was sort of what they appear to have believed at the time.

The sea above probably refers to clouds. They are made of water surprisingly. It can even refer to, as a previous poster mentioned, the celestial sea.

The stars falling from the sky is a symbolic way of saying the end of the world. Kind of like how many people say the sky is falling in on us. I'm not saying anyone should believe Genesis word for word but if you're going to criticize it, at least be opened to more sensible interpretations and not only literal ones. That goes for believers too.

Since people at this time did not know this, this interpretation is unwarranted.

And what about people observing falling stars? Without knowing what stars really are, isn't a literal interpretation at least likely?

We have to look at what people at this time actually knew about the world. Given this, a literal interpretation is very reasonable.

There are still remnants of the 'dome' left, I see part of it when I look at the horizon. From where I stand, the 'dome' looks solid blue on a sunny day and greyish on overcast days, I can't see the pillars that hold the 'dome' but I guess they are still there. I get a fantstic view of the 'dome' from the beach.
