Meier on Samaritan hostility toward pilgrims
In his Biblica paper and section in vol. 3 of A Marginal Jew about the Samaritans, John Meier writes that Galilean pilgrims to Jerusalem would often cross over into Perea and travel down to Jericho so as to avoid Samaritan hostilities.
He doesn't cite any sources for this, so I was wondering where he might have got this from. Does anyone have any idea? |

Given both the publication date (which precedes Meier) and the Anchor Bible Dictionary's ubiquity, it seems pretty reasonable to suggest that this is Meier's source, and the reason he offers no classical source is that the ABD doesn't either. ETA I suppose you could check that more readily if I gave the bibliographic information for Hoehner. Here it is: Hoehner, H. W. 1972. Herod Antipas. Cambridge. Regards, Rick Sumner |

It's not just Meier who says that. It's something I've read in countless other places as well. I don't know the ultimate source for it (Philo vaguely tickles my memory) but it;s my impression that the route has been well known since antiquity.
