Quite a few people with fertility problems know this. There are books that include this info.

As far as the Hebrews or other ancients figuring it out, they had millenia to do it. Once they figured out that a man was a part of the procreative process, wise women and men no doubt could learn it through simple charting and observation. They weren't stupid and they were highly motivated.

He was not masturbating, he was practicing coitus interruptus. So the idea that masturbation is wrong is false. YHWH wanted Jacob's line to continue. The story does not say, however, that YHWH needs everyone else to avoid this form of birth control.
