Transformed disciples
People like Gary Habermas claim that the resurrection transformed the disciples into people willing to preach in the face of persecution.
Others say that as well http://www.bible.org/page.asp?page_id=639 'It was a message proclaimed immediately beginning with the morning of the third day.....But after the resurrection, we find the disciples joyous, fearless, and bearing public testimony.' If you look at the Bible, you will see that this is not true. The resurrection did not inspire the disciples to bear public testimony. That came later. Weeks later. Why were the disciples not transformed by the resurrection? Why did God have to give them a kick up the backside and tell them to start preaching? Why were transformed disciples so quiet for weeks after they had been transformed? According to the Bible, if they were transformed into anything by the events of the sunday morning, they were transformed into fishermen. |

The wide disparity between the varying accounts of what happened after the resurrection is the basis of the "Easter Challenge" . A similar argument could probably be made that there were probably lots of conflicting accounts of what the disciples of Jesus did after his death but only one eventually gained common acceptance and admission into the NT canon. I guess that's a roundabout way of saying that I wouldn't take any of the post resurrection anecdotal tales about what one or another disciple said or did too seriously. Although it does indeed sound like for the most part the disciples just holed up in a room waiting for a "kick up the backside" as you so colorfully described. -Atheos |
