Default Tacitus on the Chrestians

In http://www.tektonics.org/tekton_01_01_01_TC.html JP (No Link) Holding writes 'The text of the oldest manuscript, and most likely reading, spells "Christians" with an e ("Chrestians")'

Is this true? Does this mean that Tacitus conducted detailed research on the 'Chrestians' before writing his famous passage on them?

What does "oldest manuscript" refer to? The oldest extant manuscript by Tacitus?

I'd say no, it doesn't mean that.
