The bible teaches that jesus lies about being humble and ministers didn't learn that.
Now see, I'd argue a textbook doesn't teach either. It too simply lies there.

Matthew 26:
6While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, 7a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

8When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. 9"This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor."

10Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.

Evidently, the dude stank in more ways than one...

So we can ignore all of Timothy because it is only directed at Timothy? That's ok by me, I was ignoring it already. I think every single writing of Pauls in the bible is a letter to some church or church leader.

Is it your opinion then that it we can ignore all of Pauls instructions to those early church leaders as being inapplicable anywhere but in the church and for those church leaders?

Well, the bible certainly does "lie" there.
You have to admit to some degree that a book can "teach" you something if it is the sole source for the information it provides. Sure it takes YOU to open it and read it but then where are you getting the information from that you are learning as you are reading it?
Otherwise, why then do Christians spend so much money, effort and time in passing out bibles all over the world?

Depends on what Paul was writing.

Are you trying to argue that everything ought to apply universally?

No, I'm arguing that every thing Paul wrote was written to some church or church leader. It appears to be your argument that we pick and choose only those passages we like from among those writings as being applicable to anyone outside a church and not a church leader.

Do you think it's an all or nothing proposition? That we can't use some good old criticism to find out what is likely instruction for a specific church and what is to be more generally applied?

That sounds like when people say, "She learned me how to ride a bike." I can agree it's a common expression but I don't agree with it being technically correct. I'm a sticky bitch on this issue and it's wrapped on in ideas of education and learning that are outside my thoughts on christianity.

Then for you a writer cannot teach you something through his/her book which he/she wrote for that purpose?

I agree. None of that crap is addressed to me. I dismiss it the way xians dismiss the Koran...
