Red face Jesus the humble...

Quote:
Matthew 26:
6While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, 7a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

8When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. 9"This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor."

10Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.
Oh boy, how do Christians keep getting away with touting this asshole as some great guy?

Interestingly, every wealthy person on the planet could use the same rationale to not give charity. Afterall, each wealthy person will have a very finite life-span, while poverty will go on. Particularly old wealthy persons could use this excuse: "You'll always have the poor, but I'll only be with you for a few more years". Therefore, gimmeee gimmeee.

I understood this when I was a child, but christians sure don't seem to want to. I battled over this a while ago in a thread with a christian that of course didn't give in an inch.

I love it how jesus has to announce in public that he is humble.

Maybe the story is in the wrong order. Maybe Mrs Simon the Leper dumped the bottle on his head after he made the remark.

"Asshole" is a bit harsh. He was only human and probably no worse than the average.

But this line always did puzzle me. He's not setting a good example there.

If he truly was "only human" then great. He was just one asshole out of many that the world has seen. If he was truly the messiah, then he had no business being an asshole, though.

Oh, but for christians, he was suppose to be god come to earth, so he is far and away the most important thing ever...

I like this one. Probably in one of the gospels that got destroyed.

Default More humility

Quote without comment. Matthew 11:20--24:

Quote:
Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: Woe unto thee Chorazin! woe unto thee Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you. And thou Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
Matthew 12:5--6:

Quote:
Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
Matthew 12:42:

Quote:
The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
Quote:
Ah am the greatest!
(Oops. Sorry, that was Muhammed Ali.)

heh, I liked Andrew Lloyd Webber's re-write of that scene.... up to a point:

That's not too bad a rationalisation actually
But then we get to the "humble" part, and if anything it makes him look even worse than Mat.:
