You are still not saying where you got this number from. I can't think of any army ever of that size until the 19th century. Bear in mind that in the 12th century, a time far more advanced, it was estimated that the Levant could support a population of 1 million people. That's total population, men, women, and children.

A little fact I think is relevant: The current British land army contains about 110,000 men, the total armed forces comes to about 190,000. I think that puts 500,000 into context. It has to be an exaggeration.
