Default 1 Corinthians Chapters 14, 15 and 16 Are Fakes

I have been literally going through every reference to the First Letter to the Corinthians in the Writings of Clement of Alexandria. I found that he cites just about every other line of the material which appears before chapter 14. Once we get there he knows almost nothing about any of the material. There are forty lines in chapter 14, I am not even sure he ever knew anything from this section (perhaps a line). There are fifty eight lines in chapter 15 we can be certain only that Clement cited two maybe three lines here and nothing from chapter 16 which has twent four lines in total.

In other words Clement knows only a half a dozen of the final three chapters or one hundred and twenty lines of 1 Corinthians. More interesting perhaps is that almost no pre-Nicene Church Father knows anything about chapter 16. Here are the witnesses to that chapter:

Interesting topic. Pray continue. Do you think the odd mentions of 1 Cor 16 in the pre-nicene dads are interpolations, or was some of the material elsewhere in Paul

For novices in this area can you answer silly questions like what Irenaeus and Tertullian know about 1 Corinthians?

There are forty lines in chapter 14, I am not even sure he ever knew anything from this section (perhaps a line). There are fifty eight lines in chapter 15 we can be certain only that Clement cited two maybe three lines here and nothing from chapter 16 which has twent four lines in total.

In other words Clement knows only a half a dozen of the final three chapters or one hundred and twenty lines of 1 Corinthians. More interesting perhaps is that almost no pre-Nicene Church Father knows anything about chapter 16.
Thank you Stephan, very interesting, as noted already, by Vorkosigan.

May I ask, from ignorance, not as one who has actually read Irenaeus, or any of the other preNicean "fathers", how confident are you, that Clement comments on every other chapter from each of Paul's epistles save 1 Corinthians, chapters 14, 15, and 16? (Did Clement perhaps also omit commentary on some other chapters, from other epistles, as well as these three from 1 Corinthians?)

A related question, perhaps: if 14, 15, and 16 are fakes, how do we know, given the widespread distribution of these three chapters, for example, in our oldest extant copies of Paul's letters, P46 which Kenyon has dated to publication in the early third century, that other chapters of Paul's letters are not also fakes?

In other words, what is there about Clement of Alexandria's commentary that leads you to regard his description of what Paul had written, at the same time, approximately, in the early decades of the third century, as the gold standard representing an authentic, accurate description of what Paul had written a century earlier?

Why couldn't there have been fakes, as well, in Clement's possession?

Finally, I must ask, though I admire this kind of research, and concur with Vorkosigan, yes, let us see more, but, should you not spell out for us, exactly what your source material for Clement's description, is based upon?

If you are using a corrupt version of Clement, then, is it fair to conclude that Clement's omission of those three chapters of Paul's letter is deliberate, (he couldn't write about something invisible) and not a reflection of some subsequent intervention? Are you basing your research on Clement's original document (we know of only one extant copy, correct?), or on Cosaert's analysis, or both, or some other commentator's version of what Clement had written? In particular, how does your source material compare with the condition of P46?

Stephan Huller's claims are UTTERLY FLAWED. The writings attributed to Clement of Alexandria do NOT show that 1 Corinthians 14, 15 and 16 are fakes.

Examine "The Instructor" 1.6 attributed to Clement of Alexandria.
Quote:
....With the greatest clearness the blessed Paul has solved for us this question in his First Epistle to the Corinthians, writing thus: Brethren, be not children in understanding; howbeit in malice be children, but in understanding be men...
Examine KJV 1 Corinthians 14.20
Quote:
Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
Now examine "The Stromata" 1.14 attributed to Clement of Alexandria
Quote:
....Accordingly to the Corinthians (for this is not the only instance), while discoursing on the resurrection of the dead, he makes use of a tragic Iambic line, when he said, What advantages it me if the dead are not raised? Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. Be not deceived; evil communications corrupt good manners....
Examine KJV 1 Corinthians 15.32-33
Quote:
......what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die. 33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
The writings, "The Instructor" and "the Stromata", attributed to Clement of Alexandria do NOT show that 1 Corinthians 14, 15 and 16 are fakes.

Very interesting observations Stephan.

You could try getting a copy of The Textual History of the Letter to the Romans (or via: amazon.co.uk), by Harry Gamble Jr (1977, 151 pages), still available new for $20.

A thorough examination of the textual evidence for a 14, a 15 and a 16 chapter version floating about, takes up the first 35 pages.

There should be threads about this in the archives, as it was kicked about by Ben C Smith (PBUH) and Andrew Criddle, as well as others, about 2 years ago.
