Bible verses to use against the fundies?
Just wondering what some good Bible Verses are good to use against fundies. The only one I know of as of right now is Mathew 6:5-6 (Thx Brighid in another thread):
Mat 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. Mat 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. What other good ones are there? |

It depends on the context of the argument.
A couple good ol' standbys are: Proverbs 30:5-6 5 "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar. * For fundies who want to argue that the bible says one thing, but means another. God says that's a no no. Another good one is Matthew 19:16-21 The Rich Young Man 16Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" 17"Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments." 18"Which ones?" the man inquired. 19Jesus replied, " 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,'[1] and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'[2] " 20"All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?" 21Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." * Good for those arguments where we can claim that we are justified - biblically - in being atheists. Notice that Jesus says nothing about having faith, or believing, but instead stresses works, deeds. Then, when the fundie points to John 3:16, you can say, "So what are you saying? Is Matthew 19:16-21 wrong? That doesn't fit very well with Romans 30:5-6!" I mean, the whole point of Christianity is salvation, and the bible can't even keep that story straight! Good times. (Note: Another good example of this is Matthew 16:27: 27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. I keep a list of verses in my "Bible Verses" folder, in my favorites. Works out pretty good. Also, I always reference Biblegateway.com, because it's their site. If they see a link to the Skeptics Annotated Bible, they won't even check it out. |

Numbers 22. Ask why God made an ass talk but didn't stop the holocaust.
Or try the heart warming, inspirational psalm 137 which speaks of dashing infants against rocks: "O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us- he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks. " (Ps. 137.8-9) happy is the man who steals babies through armed force and smashes them on rocks? You go God! :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy |

I'm sort of a Christian. You see, I don't believe in silly stuff: the trinity, original sin, penal substituion, global flood, young earth and so on. I don't hate homosexuals, I don't think most of my neigbors will suffer eternal torment in hell. Furthermore, I do not subscribe to an image of God that makes axeheads float, asses talk, Christians die for lying but is too busy to prevent the Holocaust, the storm surge that killed half a million people near Bangladesh or any other huge natural disaster. That is supernatural theism and to be blunt, supernatural theism is arbitrary, incoherent and all out sucks.

So, Magus, Vinnie is not a "true christian" (TM) because he doesn't like the idea of smashing children on rocks?

Really? You're aware, of course, that the trinity shows up in other religions, right? We seem to be posting simultaneously; I'll wait for your reply.
