my problem with the second quote is that it doesn't even acknowledge any opposition to circumcision, but rather seems to give the practice a freeride by modern science which is hardly the case

I was under the impression that the practice of circumcision had a valid medical purpose at that place and time, however it is now unnecessary because we now have better living conditions and more effective medical procedures.
