How this "one true" book came about?
1st time poster...and kinda new to the board. I am sure this has been asked b4 so forgive me in advance if it is redundant but....
I work with alot of christians down here in the bible belt. They preach this true book of "theirs" as timeless with no grey areas. Truth be told, none of them can tell me historically when or how this book was written. They say it has been written by god through man. I was raised catholic so I dont have alot of knowledge of the history...just the parts the church wanted us to know...which I am finding out is alot of hogwash! So what I am asking is...is there any history telling us how the book was really pulled together? Who chose what to put in and what to leave out...and what time frame this took place in? Thanks in advance for the history lessons!! |

There's a pretty good short version of this on the Straight Dope pages.

Thanks robto...will check it out. I know the answer will be complex but you would think that if someone was to believe this was the word of god that they would have done some research on how and when it was written. I have found the opposite...most preach... it but have no clue on any history!!!

Your question is quite simply far too huge to be answered in a simple manner. I strongly suggest that you look to the list of recommended reading for this forum and pick an appropriate book. It is a good and proper question but just too big. You can also use the search function here to find thread on most topics relating to your question. You also need to distinguish between the old testament and the new, as they have very different timeframes and ideologies. Julian |

If you want to focus on just the New Testament, this article by Richard Carrier is a good place to start.
