Karen Armstrong's The Bible: A Biography- Recommended?
I found a copy of The Bible: A Biography (or via: amazon.co.uk) at my library and would like to know if anyone here recommends it to someone who is trying to get a grasp on the subject.
It has been a long time since I looked into the history of the Bible and hoped some of the knowledgeable folks here can tell me if it is worth the time to read or not. Since I am surrounded by fundies I try to keep abreast of what the current thoughts are on the Bible in case I need to discuss it. Thanks. |

I haven't read that particular work of hers, so I can't be much help. Even so, I'd like to comment that after reading two or three of her other books, I think you're very likely to find it worth your while. For my taste, Armstrong is a bit too sympathetic to religion in general, but that's just me. She is hardly a champion of any sort of orthodoxy. Most evangelical Christians hate her, I'm pretty sure.

Here's a thread on it from 2007:
Karen Armstong: The Bible, a Biography. This is not considered one of her better books. Check the stickied thread at the top of this forum for recommendations on the history of the Bible. |

A few months back I read A History of God by Karen Armstrong. I thought it well written and well researched.
For now, am reading Jesus, One Hundred Years Before Christ by Alvar Ellegard. The quest continues... |
